A very disappointing day for Clonmel Celtic Youths on Saturday as they crashed out of the Munster Youths cup after a 2-1 defeat to Clonmel Town. Unfortunately Celtic never really got going on the day and paid the price. A few weeks ago they comprehensivley beat the same opposition by doing what they are good at i.e. keeping possession and making good use of space and moving the ball about. In boxing parlance rather that keeping the opposition at arm's length they got dragged into a dogfight on Saturday against a physically strong Town side and as a result they struggled to have a meaningful possession and simply didn't create enough tackles. They were given a warning as early as the fourth minute when Oisin O'Donghue make a brilliant reflex save. The rest of the first half was a dour battle with little quality although Celtic nearly hit the front when Alex Greene flashed a header inches over from a corner. Celtic then lost the influential Aaron Costin to a nasty ankle injury and we wish him the very best in his recovery. Ten minutes into the second half Town hit the front courtesy of a stunning free kick from Ronan Walsh. Celtic were then reduced to 10 men and they were given a mountain to climb when Cian McGrath scored a second after a long ball down the middle. Jack Aylward gave Celtic hope with a neat finish on 75 minutes and moments later he was nearly in again but was foiled by the home keeper. Town nearly made the game safe late on with an effort that crashed off the bar but in the end they had done enough to advance on a 2-1 scoreline. This group of Celtic players haven't experienced the disappointment of days like this on many occasions and hopefully they can bounce back as they still have a lot to play for and on the evidence to date they still look the best Youth team in the division.
Meanwhile the U13s run in the National Cup came to an end in Wexford when they went down 3-0 to Gorey Rangers.
