A big thank you to Clonmel Credit Union for their very generous sponsorship of a new jerseys for our Under 10 team.
The original founder members of Clonmel Credit Union were members of St Luke’s benefit society which had strong links with the hospital. This was the start of Clonmel Credit Union’s strong bond with the hospital and health care workers.
At a meeting of the Society in August 1962 it was agreed to review the option of establishing a Credit Union.
By October 18th 1962 the study group had reported to be in favour of setting up a Credit Union and 6 Directors were elected. The Directors were Denis Healy, Thomas Farrell, Patrick Quigley, James Hurley, William O Brien & Hugh Cuddihy. These Directors and supporters completed the many steps before formal approval was granted by the Irish League of Credit Unions. In early 1963 this process was completed.
The next key step was the official opening of the first office which occurred on the 20th of October 1966 and this office was located at 17 Irishtown. This was the first of a number of moves that have taken the Credit Union to its current location here in Parnell Street.
Clonmel, Fethard and Mullinahone Credit Unions now form a single Credit Union. The dual goals were to provide the best possible service offering to all our members and maintain the highest level of security for savers.
The founding principles of “Not for profit, not for charity, but for service” are the same today as they were in 1962.
