Clonmel Celtic B completed a great year by adding the Division 2 Shield to their promotion success after an excting 4-3 extra time win against St Nicholas at Celtic Park yesterday. Celtic started the game well and had the better of the early exchanges. They took the lead on 30 minutes with Dean McLaughlin lashing home from close range. Within 5 minutes St Nicholas were level when Celtic conceded a penalty and Patrick Fitzgerald fired home for the Solohead club. They were only level for a few minutes though as Celtic regained the lead on 38 minutes. A brilliant defence splitting pass from Julian Kerton released Ross Condon and he fired under the advancing Mark Lowry to put Celtic 2-1 ahead, a lead they held until the break. St Nicholas came more into the game in the second half and on the hour mark they were given a route back into the game when Celtic gave away another penalty. Patrick Fitzgerald scored again from the spot to make it 2-2. St Nicholas then enjoyed their best spell of the game and came close on a number of occasions to taking the lead for the first time. At the other end Celtic were incensed on 74 minutes when David Garrett was upended in the box but the referee waved away what appeared strong claims for a penalty. Celtic manager protested too strongly for the referee and was red carded. Sensing Celtic's distress St Nicholas pushed for a later winner and were nearly in with just four minutes left but were denied by a brillant save from Gavin Sheehan in the Celtic goal. Celtic appeared to find a second wind in extra time and a sharp effort from David Grace two minutes into extra time saw Celtic edge ahead again. St Nicholas however just would not throw in the towel and levelled for the third time when Philip O'Doherty took advantage of a defensive slip to make it 3-3 at half time in extra time. Both sides were tiring at this stage but Celtic made one more push forward in an effort to avoid extra time and were rewarded with just 5 minutes left on the clock. Ross Condon found space on the left and lifted a ball to the far post where Julian Kerton knocked back to David Garrett who turned the ball past Mark Lowrey to put Celtic up for the fourth time in the game. On this occasion St Nicholas couldn't respond and Celtic held out for a 4-3 win.
