It was a good weekend for our Youths and Juniors as both progressed in their respective cup games.
The Youths are through to Round 2 of the Munster Youths Cup after a 4-2 extra win against Killavilla Utd. Celtic started very slowly and found ourselves behind after five minutes. They gradually grew in to the game and created some chances but failed to convert. As half time approached Celtic knew that they were well in the game but just needed a little luck in front of goal as we reached the break with Killavilla 1-0 up. Celtic were level 5 minutes into the second half after Paddy Ormonds long ball from a kick out (Oisin our goal keeper, unable to kick due to an injury), found Alex Greene whose effort was saved by the goalkeeper but found the net at the second attempt. Celtic fell behind again after sixty minutes, probably against the run of play but the heads didn’t drop and with five minutes to go Julian Kertons through ball found Alex Greene who rounded the keeper and slotted home with this left foot. Extra time now loomed. Five minutes in to extra time ,another Julian Kerton through ball found Alex Greene who had work to do, completed his hat trick with a brilliant finish to the far post. Julian Kerton completed the scoring five minutes from the end of extra time when the opposition goal keeper dropped a high ball and Julian was there to tidy it up. Celtic finished the game with nine men due to injuries and special mention must go to goal keeper Oisin O Donoghue, who made a string of fine saves throughout the game.
Meanwhile the Juniors made it to round 2 of the FAI Junior Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Borrisokane. Celtic were missing some key players but a debut goal from Mark Heffernan had Celtic 1-0 up at the break. Celtic continued to create the better chances in the second half and further goals from Rory O'Dowd and Darren Sweeney saw them advance without any major difficulty. Away ties in the FAI are never straightforward so everyone can be well pleased with their efforts particularly Rory and Peter O'Dowd and Luke O'Donnell who stood out.
