Although their season may have finished a couple of months ago we think it's worth reflecting on what was a great year for Clonmel Celtic Ladies. Of course the highlight of the year was being crowned Division 2 champions in August with a close to perfect record in the league. The Ladies actually lost their first game of the season when they went down 2-1 to Cahir but what a response from the girls.
They didn’t drop another point for the remaining 9 games. Their goal difference was the best in the league, scoring 43 goals and conceding 11 goals. They had some very convincing wins, in particular the last match of the season. At the half way stage, there were 3 teams level on points Clonmel Celtic, Cahir Park and Birdhill. The two turning points of the season, was beating Birdhill (away) and Cahir Park (home) and these victories marked them as serious contenders. The league went down to the last few games between the 3 teams and Clonmel Celtic finished the strongest only needing a draw in the last game of the season but the win saw them clear champions at the top with 3 points to spare.
Credit has to be given to the full squad who were all called on throughout the season. There was some exceptional individual and team performances. It would be a hard decision to name ‘Player of the Year’ but Sarah Ryan in midfield and Roisin McGrath on left wing stood out in many games. The most improved player in 2019 was Ciara White, who kept tallying up the goals in each game. The defence was strong and solid all season long, keeping us in games at times! Not surprising when you consider the rock solid Valerie Hogan was a constant feature all season. The golden boot for top goalscorer was shared between Ciara White and Sarah Ryan scoring 12 goals each (according to my records anyway, but I'm open to correction Valerie!!).
The week after the league finished they had to concentrate on the Tipperary Cup and were drawn at home to Division 1 Cullen Ladies FC. This game was a 7 goal thriller and Celtic won 4-3 in the last 2 mins before the final whistle seeing them through to the semi finals. It was probably the more enjoyable game played at Celtic Park this season and what a finish to this game by the girls. Their reward was a cup final against the unbeaten Division 1 winners Killenaule away and were narrowly defeated 1 nil in this game. These two results gives the girls every reson to believe that they can be competitive in the Division 1 league in 2020.
The Statistics behind a memorable season!
