The curtain came down on Clonmel Celtic's season last Friday night when they went down 4-2 to Peake Villa. Celtic were heavily punished for defensive errors by a youthful Villa side and found themselves 3-0 down at the break. Celtic made a game of it in the second half and goals from Paul Kennedy and Cian O'Sullivan brought them back into the tie but some great goalkeeping and the woodwork denied Celtic a comeback and the season ended on a low. Overall a very disappointing season for the Juniors. A sixth place finish in the TSDL Premier League being their lowest in a decade. A terrible start to the season with four successive defeats matched by a poor finish with four straight home defeats. It was marginally better in between when Celtic put together a decent enough run that saw them lose just once in 16 games. However this run was negated by tame exits in the three cups to teams they would have brushed aside a few years ago. There's no doubting it was a poor season but nonetheless you have to acknowledge and thank the players and the mangement team for their time and efforts this season. It's tough division and I think not having a back up team whether it is a Youth or B team makes it even more challenging. Celtic are one of two teams in the Premier, the other being Old Bridge, that don't have a Youth or Reserve side and this may form part of their end of season review. It's difficult to pick many positives from the season but Kyle Ryan's 22 goal haul was very impressive in his first season and Ben Cooney was also solid in goal enjoying a run of clean sheets mid way through the season. Some of our younger players like Jack Purcell and Peter O'Dowd will only benefit from a lot of games they played and both can be pleased with their contributions. There is some light at the end of the tunnel but the hard work for next season must start now.
