We had an interesting situation in our game against Vee Rovers last Sunday that caused quite a bit of debate and discussion among the Celtic supporters that travelled to Clogheen. Celtic were 1-0 to the good at the time and well on top when the referee had a big call to make. The ball was played into the Vee box and Kyle Ryan was fouled. The referee appeared to be about to blow for the penalty but as the ball fell kindly to Seanie O'Hara in a very good position he allowed play to go on. Unfortunately Seanie rolled the ball wide of the post. There was a pause as a lot of people expected the referee to call back play and award a penalty as Seanie's effort was within seconds of Kyle been fouled. However the referee awarded a goal kick. Was this the correct decision? Well after a little bit of research I can confirm that the referee was technically correct. Once he allows 'play-on' he cannot recall the decision after the advantage has been executed and lost, in other words he cannot give the penalty after he had played advantage to allow Seanie a shot on goal. However as the incident lasted just seconds a lot of referees will call play back & use the excuse that there wasn't enough time between the foul & the effort on target for them to either blow for the foul or to play/signal/shout an advantage. In my opinion this would have been the fairest thing to do on Sunday, well I would say that wouldn't I. So credit the referee for getting a big decision technically correct but he was a bit 'mean' wasn't he because as explained he could have given the penalty. Have a look at just the first goal in the following clip, this was a very similar to what happened last Sunday and note here the referee gave the penalty!!!!
