‘’It has been brought to the club's attention that there has been a lot of negative comments circulating on social media recently regarding the club's decision to reduce the number of players on our Under 13 and Under 12 teams for the coming season. We feel we have a duty to our volunteers and our coaches to issue a statement on the matter. As a club we feel we get many things right but occasionally we will make mistakes and if we do so we will hold up our hands, review our practices and learn from these mistakes. Like all clubs we are far from perfect but we do our best. By way of background we have a big number of children involved with the club at the non-competitive age groups i.e. Under 7 to Under 11. The focus at these age groups is participation and enjoyment as we try to teach children the basics of the game. One of the main reasons we have sustained big numbers at these age categories is because of the generosity of parents who have responded to calls for assistance and supervision at training sessions. After U11 the players move from blitz format to a more structured league format which requires more travel and regular matches . As a result the time and commitment required from coaches tends to increase . With this in mind we as a club review prior to the start of the season what resources are required and what are available to ensure we can comply with league requirements and child safety requirements in entering teams into the league. At times this means that we cannot cater for all the players who were involved previously. We often appeal for people to assist in looking after teams and in hindsight this is something we possibly should have done in this instance before making a decision on the teams being entered .The club will review it's practices in this area by making parents aware of the need for additional resources and looking for their assistance prior to making a final decision on numbers , and hopefully avoiding this situation in future. We will also review our communications with parents. On previous occasions we have invited parents to meetings but not all turned up. The letter option was an attempt to explain to all the reasons for our decisions. It does seem insensitive and for this we apologize to everyone who received this letter. Our main objective as a football club is for our children to enjoy being part of Clonmel Celtic. I think it is fair to say in the majority of cases we meet this objective but on occasions like this we have disappointed children and parents and for this we apologize.''
