The management committee of the TSDL made a presentation to Clonmel Celtic captain David Joyce at their AGM last Tuesday to recognize his amatuer international caps with the Republic of Ireland. On our trip to Tipp during the week I had a brief question and answer session with David.
Joycey Q & A
Schoolboy memories: He remembers Richie Kiely as his first coach and he was also coached by Michael Kiely and Tony Acheson. A schoolboy game that stands out was an u12 Cup final against Moyglass Utd where all the Celtic team decided to dye their hair green for the game. David actually remembers scoring that day but the game was dominated by a Moyglass player who was about 5 feet taller than everyone and not surprisingly caused havoc at set pieces with Celtic (then St Olivers) going down 3-1. I actually remember this game as I was due to take a team photo but was delayed getting there. I got a photo after the game during which one of the Celtic players cheekily asked Moyglass for a loan of the cup for the photo.
Junior highlight: 2015 double of League and Cup for Clonmel Celtic.
Junior lowlight: FAI Junior Cup semi final defeat to Sheriff YC. On the previous occasion Celtic reached the FAI Junior Cup semi final (2-1 defeat to Kilbarrack Utd in 2012) David was working in Australia.
Most memorable piece of coach advice: Work rate, put the big effort in and you’ll get your rewards.
Most important goal: Goal in 1-0 win away to St Michaels that won Celtic league in 2015.
Favourite/best goal: Goal in league v Cashel. A superb first time half volley v Cashel Town that found the top corner.
Favourite team: Liverpool.
Favourite Player: Steve Gerrard.
Other Sport: Boxing, 3 time All Ireland Champions at 39kg, 42 kg and 48kg. Found it difficult meeting weights so took time out to concentrate on soccer.
Favourite Boxer: Lennox Lewis.
Coaching: Wouldn’t rule it out in the future as he’d like to give something back but focus on playing at the moment (So Kenny’s ok for another 12 years!!).
Away from soccer: Like fishing and also tv series Prison Break.
International call up: Got a call from James Walsh asking him had he any LOI experience. This would have ruled him out but went for trials for Munster/Connaught and after few assessments made team that beat Leinster/Ulster to qualify to represent Ireland in UEFA Regions qualifiers. First Cap: Friendly v Northern Ireland in September 2016 and has went on to be capped 5 more times. Three of these were in games in UEFA Regions Qualifiers in Italy last autumn with last two appearances coming in warm up games against Jersey Islands last weekend.
Room mate: In Italy he roomed with Pa Mullins, Pike Rovers. As Mullins won’t be in the travelling party to Turkey he doesn’t mind who he rooms with as long as he doesn’t snore.
Preparation: The squad met up last weekend and after two tests against Jersey Islands in Limerick and Tipperary the final squad of 20 for the UEFA Regions Finals were confirmed and released by the FAI to the public on Tuesday. The players are working hard on their fitness and will meet against in FAI Headquarters on June 17th for training and medical assessments. They will then depart for Turkey on Tuesday 27th June 2017.
Final Schedule: Seven teams qualified for the UEFA Regions Finals and along with the hosts Turkey they will make up two groups of four with the winners of each group playing in the final. Ireland, represented by Munster/Connaught are in Group B and will play Southern Region (Russia) on July 1st followed by games against Castilla Y Leon (Spain) July 3rd and Olomouc (Czech Republic) on July 6th.
Interesting Statistic : This season in sixteen games he started Clonmel Celtic had an 87% success rate, winning 14 and drawing 2. In the games he missed through injury (10) Celtic’s success rate reduced to 20% (with 2 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats). I’ll leave you draw the conclusion!!
